Roaming around the Dolomites of South Tyrol

Everytime I get to drive and hike through the stunning scenery of Northern Italy with its endless views of rugged mountains, my heart skips a beat. The Dolomites in the province of Belluno are of unmatched beauty and fall is my favorite time to go there.

This time I visited the area of Cortina D’Ampezzo, which is a charming skiing village in winter and famous for having hosted the Winter Olympics and Alpine Skiing Championships. In summer, it’s a great base for hiking and climbing adventures, not far from Lago di Braies and Tre Cime di Lavaredo and just a little over a two hour drive from Venice in the South. There are countless of Rifugios (=mountain huts with basic accomodation) in the mountains of South Tyrol providing an endless variety of hiking and climbing tours. Even Hollywood has noticed, as the iconic mountain ranges around Cortina have been featured in the thriller “Cliffhanger” and this ridiculously epic James Bond skiing and motorcycle chase scene in “Four your eyes only”. The stunts are just incredible, holy mother… WOAH, I’m off topic!

It’s been a beautiful fall day in October when I explored the serpentine mountain roads and passes around Cortina once again and met Mel and her husband for a photo shoot on top of a mountain pass. They have been married for a couple of years now, and while being on holiday in South Tyrol I shot their anniversary session. Fall is the perfect time to visit this area, it can get pretty crowded in summer, unless you know where to go. There are lots of beautiful off the beaten track hiking trails to skip the masses… but oh, off topic again!

The weather was a perfectly mild fall evening and we got to experience a pretty serious Alpenglow at 2263 metres sea level. Even long after the sun was gone, the skylight reflected off of the rock formations and made for an ethereal glow. South Tyrol - I’ll be back!
